My name is Kathleen Kelly and I am an experienced addictions and trauma therapist and counsellor. I help individuals struggling with alcohol, substance and behavioural addictions. I work with developmental and relational trauma, adult children of alcoholics, complex PTSD, co-dependency, relapse prevention and personal growth in recovery.
I have an MSc in Addiction Psychology and Counselling from a London university, and trained as an addiction and trauma therapist at The Priory in London and The Meadows in Arizona. My approach to working with addiction is non-pathologizing and based on the Meadows model of understanding addiction as a symptom of the adaptations and defense mechanisms individuals develop to function in an environment that is less than nurturing or overwhelming. Adaptations that were necessary for survival in childhood are no longer necessary and becoming problematic. This is an attachment-oriented approach to therapy using evidence-based practices supported by the latest research, neuroscience and understanding of trauma.
I am a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists and an Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counsellor. My practice is insured and registered in Belgium; I engage in continuing education; and practice with the supervision of a senior UKCP registered therapist and a certified EMDR family therapist.
I adhere to the code of ethics endorsed by the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists and respect the confidentiality of the relationship between therapist and client.
In addition to an MSc in Addiction Psychology and Counselling, I also hold a PhD in Pharmacology from the Medical College of Virginia, and have specialist training in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (University of Oxford), EMDR (EMDRIA-approved), Lifespan Integration, Inner Child Work, Humanistic Counselling, Psychological Coaching and Motivational Interviewing.
